Cathinones Caused 123 Deaths in Florida in 2013; Flakka, a Cathinone, Begins to Make Deadly Progress Among Florida Streets

Miami, FL (PRWEB) April 23, 2015

There’s a lot of buzz revolving the new designer drug, Flakka, but not a lot of information about the drug, other than it causes excited delirium in those who abuse it. Flakka is attributed to inciting dangerous hallucinations, super human strength, and bouts of aggression. According to NBC News on April 15th the United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse announced cathinones sold over the internet was responsible for 123 deaths in Florida.

Flakka is a cathinone. The problem with flakka is that it’s cheap ($ 5 a pop), addictive, and the doses of the addictive substance fluctuates from batch to batch. NBC New s quotes James N. Hall, co-director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Substance Abuse at Nova Southeastern University, “Some get high and some get very sick and may become addicted, some go crazy and even a few die. But they don’t know what they are taking or what’s going to happen to them.”

Harbor Village Detox is an inpatient medical detox center in South Florida reeling from the effects of patients affected by the addictive designer drug. A medical associate comments, “We’ve seen this drug more and more recently- it’s hard to miss the stories in the newspaper and online- but to see someone affected by the drug is a different story. Patients who are withdrawing from the substance exhibit signs similar to that of an opiate withdrawal. Teenagers are smoking flakka with their e-cigarettes; it’s a dangerous substance with a wide reach.”

The medical associate notes, “Because we don’t know very much about this drug yet, it makes treating it difficult as there can be many substances mixed in with [flakka]. People don’t know what doseage their getting because the purity is never consistent. You could be dead on your first hit of flakka and never know what happened.”

Flakka has reached Florida’s headlines most notably:

A Fort Lauderale man attempted to break into the Fort lauderdale police station because he was hallucinating, and believed he was pursued by murderers

In March a man high on flakka climbed a spiked fence and was stabbed with the spikes as he fell on them

In February a man on flakka stripped naked and ran the streets claiming people stole his clothing
